Deletion of a .mobi domain is performed 90 days after the domain's expiration date if, during this interval, the holder does not renew their right of use by paying the annual maintenance fee and, where applicable, the quarantine fee.

The deletion of .mobi domain names is processed automatically based on the availability of the RoTLD Registry servers.

More and more mobile devices are capable of browsing the Internet. ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) therefore introduced a new sponsored top-level domain in July 2005: the .mobi domain is derived from the English word "mobile" and signals to visitors a website optimized for mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, and PDAs. Google, Microsoft, and Nokia were among the companies that sponsored .mobi. Any administrator or webmaster worldwide can buy and register their own .mobi domain — regardless of nationality, residence, and company location.
Especially for mobile applications or web services, the .mobi domain offers enormous potential. Visitors easily recognize the mobile optimization and access your website faster. Studies show that .mobi domains are visited significantly more often on mobile devices than conventional TLDs such as .uk or .com.

Statistics

After its launch, the top-level domain attracted great interest: early customers were major companies such as VISA, American Express, Virgin, eBay, and Ferrari. In the first half-year after the launch, over 300,000 .mobi domains were registered. Today, the market is open to administrators and webmasters of private blogs as well as small and large projects. The number of registered domains has grown accordingly. In April 2011, the mobile domain reached one million registered domains.
